How we pick

We start from what you need in a real emergency, then look for gear that does that job reliably at three budgets. We favor items with long track records, independent certifications where they exist (NIOSH for respirators, NSF/ANSI or EPA registration for water treatment), and makers who publish real specs.

Whenever a free or cheap option works, like a Stop the Bleed class or a bathtub full of water, we say so first.
